Help us promote your certificate programmes

NZIM has long been aware that of the many students leaving secondary schools with two or three NZIM certificate papers very few complete their qualification at tertiary level. We like to include with each student’s Statement of Achievement a note that indicates where the student can go to complete the certificate. We are happy to include a brochure or other publicity material from the providers in the student’s area if supplied.

This means we need information from polytechnics and other tertiary providers that we can include in the mail-out.

Please send Diana the information before the end of November, if you wish to catch the early results. If you want to know approximate numbers for your region, please contact Diana at diana_garrett@nzim.co.nz or Anne Marie at nziminc@nzim.co.nz.

NZIM cadetship

The cadetship is another way of ensuring that secondary students complete their qualification at a tertiary institution. Information will be sent to each qualifying student about businesses in their area who have agreed to act as sponsoring organisations for cadets. Each student will need to apply for the position, and the organisation will give the cadet time off to complete the qualification. Sponsors will write reports on student work and provide a reference at the end of the year.

The success of the scheme depends on the number of sponsors we can find. You can help by referring any potential sponsors to NZIM. Already two providers have found and referred sponsors to NZIM, but we need more if the scheme is going to be successful.

This is an excellent opportunity for tertiary providers to develop a good working relationship with businesses in their area.

A new qualification – Certificate in Language, Culture and Management

Do you have overseas students with little understanding of business, tenuous grasp of English, and at sea in a foreign culture! Are they wanting to get a degree in Business Studies as quickly as possible, before their money runs out? Or at least a Diploma in Business!

One solution is to take the new Level 4 NZ Dip Bus paper 469 Academic Skills for Business Studies. Then at least the students will be able to research, write essays, make presentations and write reports.

Another solution is to immerse students in language and culture in a real business environment, so that they develop their language skills through active use and continuous feedback, while at the same time learning about business and management.

The new NZIM Certificate in Language, Culture and Management will do just that.

It is a six month (60 credit) course which integrates language, cultural understandings and management within the workplace.

Graduates gain four core Certificate in Management papers, as well as a 20 credit Culture and Language module. And they gain two credits into the NZ Diploma in Business – 469 Academic Skills for Business Studeis plus 20 unspecified credits - see following link to NZQA website .

A teacher guide is available for the 880 Language and Culture paper.

University Entrance and the Certificate in Management

On 14 September 2005 the New Zealand University Vice-Chancellor’s Committee (NZVCC) sent NZIM written confirmation that they have approved the NZIM Certificate in Management and Certificate in Small Business Management for University Entrance.

The approval has by-passed the NZQA University Entrance process, because NZQA will not consider any qualifications outside the NQF. However the courses are approved on the same basis, as third subject options: a minimum of 14 credits at Level 3. The approval applies from this year.

The resolution reads as follows:

"Students who have gained literacy and numeracy and 14 level 3 credits in each of 2 approved subjects plus 14 further level 3 credits in either the NZIM Certificate in Management or the NZIM Certificate in Small Business Management may be considered to have reached the university entrance standard and may be admitted ad eundem statum at entrance level.

(Note: The University of Auckland is unlikely to accept such students due to limitations on entry to its programmes.)"

The letter continues with an explanation:

"We recognise that it is not in fact possible to gain only 14 credits in NZIM courses, since they have a value of 10 credits each. So your students will need to gain 20 credits to satisfy the entrance requirement.

An entrance qualification of this kind cannot be recognised by NZQA (the common entrance standard must consist of NQF credits only), therefore admission to a university must be ad eundem statum (with equivalent status) at entrance level. It is possible that some universities charge a fee for this type of admission, which involves more individual attention than admission with common entrance standard."
