Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What does the NZIM Mentoring Programme set out to achieve?
A. The programme sets out to assist members to achieve their management career goals.

Q How does it do this?
A. By matching applicants with Fellows or Associate Fellows of NZIM who are senior and experienced managers.

Q. What procedures take place prior to a successful match?
A. Basically through a series of meetings and interchange of information.Mentors and Protégés are required to submit their CV’s. Mentors are required to attend a one-day mentoring workshop and Protégés are required to submit a list of career/management objectives which are then used to build up a profile of a suitable Mentor. Finally a “no obligations” meeting takes place between the parties to decide if the Protégé’s management objectives can be met.

Q How long does it take to match Protégés and Mentors?
A. The average time is four to six weeks.

Q. How often do mentoring meetings take place?
A. For the initial three to four months of mentoring, at three to four week intervals. As the mentoring progresses the time between meetings could stretch to six week intervals. The duration of meetings is usually one to one and a half hours.

Q. What happens if the Mentor becomes unavailable and cannot complete twelve months of mentoring?
A. Participation in the programme is suspended until a suitable replacement is found. Ultimately the Protégé receives twelve months of mentoring.

Q. How are participants assured of confidentiality?
A. The importance of confidentiality is emphasised in a Mentoring Agreement signed by all parties including NZIM at the commencement of any mentoring relationship. It is also stressed during the matching procedure that all discussions between Mentors and Protégés remain between them alone.

Q. Can Employers play a part in the mentoring programme?
A. Yes if they wish, by assisting employees who they sponsor, prepare for the programme. This could involve them advising on the management goals and objectives that should be pursued while on the programme. Also some employers may wish to receive copies of all evaluationsIt should be emphasised that in spite of employer sponsorship discussions entered into during mentoring remain confidential.

Q. Do Protégés have to be members of NZIM?
A. Yes, they are required to be Individual Members even if their employers are Corporate Members. As we believe strongly that individual membership in conjunction with the mentoring programme is all about personal developement.
